The reason why I chose to be a Spanish Language Hispanic Culture was because when I was in high school I was enrolled in Advanced Placement Spanish Language with a teacher names Mrs. Romo. Mrs. Romo made an impact on my career choices. I would see the way how she was so passionate about what she was teaching and I would notice how much she enjoyed doing what her job. Throughout my years in high school I got the chance to be her Teacher’s Assistant (T.A) and I got the chance to help her grader her students’ test and while I would be grading her tests or helping her students when they needed help I really enjoyed doing helping them with the questions that they didn’t understand. Another reason why I chose my major is because I have always loved speaking Spanish ever since I was younger along with teaching so I decided to combine the two things that I like to do and choose it as my future career.
What I have learned from this major is how to use proper Spanish along with finding out different information about the countries in Central America along with the history and politics of Mexico. My initial goal was to obtain my Bachelors Degree in Spanish so I can later go on and obtain my teaching credentials. As far as my journey here at Cal State University, Monterey Bay, the courses that I have taken as a Spanish Language and Hispanic Language has really helped me pick what career choice I would like to pursue one day. I realized in course of these past four years I would like to focus more on the linguistics side of the Spanish Language instead of the literature aspect of it. Although both are rather interesting I prefer to work with the linguistics portion. In the areas that I am most proud of through my learning in this program was getting the opportunity to learn about a secondary culture which in my case particularly because the course that I chose to take to fulfill the Major Learning Outcome #4: Secondary Culture, I took Japanese Cinema. In that course I was able to watch films that were centered on the traditions that are important to the Japanese Culture. I personally don’t think that I would have taken a course like that on my own. I am glad that it is a requirement because I was able to gain a better understanding about how the Japanese Culture really is. Another thing that I am proud of was learning more about the culture of Mexico and the Chicanx community. Since I come from Mexican descent I already had some prior knowledge about the Mexican Community and it was important for me to find out more about my background. The areas that I would like to develop in the future are being able to work on my translating because I was able to enroll in an Intro to Spanish/English translation and I really enjoyed that course. I would like to one day be able to practice because I would like it to be my second career choice if teaching doesn’t work out. |
